On 1 July 2024, ‘A Working Lunch with Nordin’ was held in person in Alor Setar, Kedah, featuring a special guest, Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT). Led by the founding chairman of Malaysia Global Business Forum (MGBF) Nordin Abdullah, this lunch talk will delve into “Fuel Subsidy Rationalisation and the Importance of the Multi-Pathway Approach”.

In light of the recent diesel subsidy announcement by the Malaysian government, the luncheon offered timely insights and fostered meaningful dialogue on how these changes can be leveraged to support national interests and sustainable development goals (SDGs).

UMWT is uniquely positioned to address the diverse challenges and opportunities of decarbonisation. As a globally linked organisation, UMWT champions a multi-pathway approach and implements life-cycle actions that align with each country’s national interest and SDGs.

Toyota’s multi-pathway “Beyond Zero” concept showcases the need for a diverse approach to various electrified technologies, including Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Battery Electric Vehicles, and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles. These technologies are envisaged to positively impact the sustainability and design elements of the state of Kedah, aimed at reducing the environmental impact in urban and industrial mobility. The Kedah Development Plan 2035 represents opportunities for strategic collaboration.

Critical questions addressed at the lunch talk were:

  1. What is a multi-pathway approach? How will this positively impact Kedah?
  2. How does the multi-pathway approach fit in the context of subsidy rationalisation, and how can it improve current government subsidy programmes?
  3. Why should Malaysia use a multi-pathway approach to achieve net zero?
  4. Can Malaysia achieve net zero before 2050? Is there more than one technology for this?
  5. What role will the automotive sector play in achieving the SDGs and net zero?
  6. How has UMWT created leadership in this field, and will the current levels of investment help achieve net zero?

This episode of ‘A Working Lunch with Nordin’ was an exceptional opportunity to gain first-hand insights from Toyota who is on the forefront of automotive innovation and environmental sustainability.
