International Volunteer Day is a juncture for individual volunteers, communities and organisations to promote the value of volunteerism to development at the local, national and international levels.

By combining United Nations’ support with a grassroots mandate, International Volunteer Day is a unique opportunity for people and volunteer-involving organisations to work with public sector, non-profit organisations, community groups, academia and private sector.

The International Volunteer Day (IVD) mandated by the UN General Assembly, is held each year on the 5th of December. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, public and private sector.

Apart from mobilising thousands of volunteers, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development by advocating for the recognition of volunteers and working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming.

This year’s theme, ‘Global Applause Give Volunteers a Hand’ recognises volunteers worldwide and all their contribution in making peace and sustainable development a reality. It encourages people around the world to give volunteers much-deserved #GlobalApplause through social media engagement and various volunteers’ appreciation activities.

At World Assembly of Youth (WAY), we recognise the effort put in by our volunteers and their contributed time as well as energy in order to support us in achieving our goals and aims. Since its establishment in year 2006, the World Assembly of Youth’s Volunteer Programme was initiated as a platform to link youth and to develop a dedicated group of young people who are willing to assist in WAY programs and activities around the world. This programme works towards the elevation of youth and their leadership development.

WAY Volunteer Programme aims at bringing together youth of different age, race, background, and ethnic groups to interact and share their ideas while fulfilling their duties as volunteers. It also strives to develop the youth by exposing them to an environment that allows them to realise their true potential and explore their untapped capabilities.

Happy International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development!
